Final Major Project

The Brief.

For my final major project, I am intending to make a series of campaign posters for a new make up line to go into stores. I will make a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 campaign posters for the campaign for the advertisement. On each poster I will show a different product or products, showing the range. Along side the posters I want to create the brand logo so that I can work with this for the campaign. (I only want to create the logo as I don’t feel that the timescale that I have it would be possible for me to make a complete brand and all its branding.)
I am aware that this project idea could change and alter slightly as I am going through the process of experimenting and researching so I am keeping quite open minded right now about the type of make up brand I want to advertise.

Research & methodology.

I am going to look at a selection of magazines in which make up in advertised and see what existing cosmetic companies have done and what text, images and titles they have used in order to create effective advertisement for their brand.

The magazines (print) that I am going to look at are:

Vogue
Closer
Grazia
Look
Heat
Elle
... to name a few.

I am going to document my findings here in my blog.

I am going to also be looking at a selection of books. I am thinking of looking into the learning of make up artistry, as I think this make help me with a design and information on how make up should and can be applied and this will then lead me on to getting ideas even through photography.

Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules: Fabulous Looks, Beauty Essentials, and Life Lessons
By Bobbi Brown

By looking into these magazines, books and websites I can get all of the vital information that I need to create the campaign posters. I want to look at the sizes of posters and adverts and I am hoping to do a small audience test to see which adverts and posters tend to catch peoples attention the most and what it is that draws them in to this. I think that this is vital to get the campaign correct. From this I can also get my target audience and I will know what age of women I am looking to buy the products.

For some extra professional research I am going to go to make up shops and ask their advice. I am planning to email a few make up companies to their art and design departments to get their view on how and what should be on a poster when they are designing for the public. I think that this professional input will get exactly what I need for research if I am to get a response.

Learning and testing outcomes.

This project has two sets of learning outcomes that I will need to follow. These are the FMP and the methodology outcomes. I am going to look at each of the outcomes and record them in my blog as I go along. I am going to be keeping a blog for this project to keep track of my work and research.

Experimentation.

For the experimentation, as my favourite thing to do when designing is illustration, I am going to try this for this project, using different methods, such as using water-colour, marker pens and fine liners. I think experimenting with this could lead to new and exciting illustration styles and a personal feel to the project and products that I will be designing for.  With this I am thinking of experimenting with photography of products and also vector drawings. I would like to try all of these ways, in order to get the best result for the poster campaigns.

Professional practice.

I am going to approach this project as though it is going to be used in a portfolio for myself. As a portfolio would be used to go to interviews and help me in the future, I want to get this project just right with me and my style. I want my portfolio to have an on going theme for my style and seem it as recognizable for me. I am going to do research into the type of paper and weight of paper that I need to use for this, so that I get it just right and looking professional.

Production Schedule.

I have made a production schedule so that I can keep track of where I feel I should be in the future with the project. I want my time keeping for this project to be good and to make sure that I have enough time for my designing and getting everything right. My time schudle is a little diffuclt as I can only do my work in the evenings and at the weekends but I am putting all efforts in to this in order to do it all to the best of my ability with the timetable I have.

8th - 20th March - Writing my proposal.
21st March - 6th April - Doing research (Web, Books, Magazines,  Audience test)
7th - 30th April - Designing and experimenting
1st - 20th May - Final design, making perfections and getting correct paper that fits with final design.
20th - 23rd May - Printing
24th May - HAND IN DAY.

Between this timetable I am allowing for mistakes and unexpected problems to arise. I have given myself a lot of time for each section and so I believe that the project is about to get a good chance of getting a good grade with all of the planning.
