For a start on my research into this project I am going to take a look at womens advertising in general. I want to look in magazines at clothing adverting firstly as I think that make up and clothing advertising all inter links with one another with themes and ideas at some point.
I am going to look at some magazines that I have lying around at home first, to look at some general adverts, whether it be handbags, clothing, make up or jewellery.
The first magazine I am looking through is Marie Claire.
1. The first advert that I come across is a Lancome make-up advert.
It has a large image of Emma Watson on. Her skin looks flawless and her make up is perfect. There is only a small part of the background on show which is just a plain silver (looks like foil) This is linking to her dress which is also silver and by doing this the attention of their viewer is drawn to her bright red lipstick and painted nails.
In the corner of the page is the products that they are advertising. They are what looks like actual size. I think that this could play a vital role in how and where I place the products that I will be advertising.
2. The next advertisement that I see is one from Clinique. They are showing the products on their own, no celebrity and nothing else to grab your attention apart from the colour and the product. There is a few cubes of what looks like jelly before it is melted down, these contrast well with the shape of the colouring balm.
3. Whilst looking through April '13 Glamour magazine (along with the mag I also got a small extra magazine which is 'the ultimate guide to everything beauty') Towards the back of this magazine there is a few spreads on make up. The photography on these pages is what caught my attention.
As you can see from the introducing spread that the lip prints and photograph on the opposite page are purposefully done this way. They have been placed and carefully thought out in a way that will get readers to carry on looking through this feature.
I really like the layout of this. Although I am going to be doing a campaign with posters, I think that it is important for me to be looking else where and how make up is advertised in magazines.
The next page of this feature is also quite striking. I am instantly drawn to the colour of the lipstick in this photograph. I think that also the way that the lips have been pulled down by the finger with is what makes this interesting to me. When looking closely, you can see the liptick that has come off onto the finger and I think that it just adds a little 'normality' to the image. It still looks perfect, but even with the lipstick coming off.
What I also like about the spread is the layout of the opposite page. I think the negative space on the page works wonderfully along with the colour that is going on. It makes the reader look straight to where they want. I think I need to look into this kind of technique when I start to write and begin with ideas.
Following on with this feature I am looking at the next page. This page is based on eye liner. Again the same for this spread with the image, and the negative space, working really well along side each other. The colours that have been chosen on the image as well as the examples of eye liner pencils along the edge of the page.
These next few adverts that I have looked at are all quite a similar layout. By looking through two magazines I saw 3 adverts which all looked quite similar to each other.
Two of these adverts are for the same product. (Mascara - but different types of mascara within the brand) Although I do think that these adverts work well with what they are promoting I think that they are all too similar and I find also quite dull, one of these I didn't actually see when first flicking through the mags when looking for the adverts.
By looking at these three advertisements I have made the decision that I want to make my campaign bright, vibrant and different. I am going to explore a few more avenues of how other make up brands have done campaigns and launching new ranges.
I have also got to think about the logo that I am going to design. I need to think of a brand name that I think will be suitable. But firstly, I think I am going to do a few drawings and ideas to get a feel for the kind of style that I am going to aim for.
I am going to go into a few department stores and try to collect a few leaflets, look at how they have advertised in store, I think that looking in the magazines is just as important as looking in the stores, the 'impulse' buy when a woman is out shopping, tends to bring lots more sales, especially with make up, it is a luxury and brands such as MAC, Benefit Bare Minerals and Dior are in a different league of price ranges to brands such as Rimmel, Maybelline, Barry M and Collection 2000. These kind of brands can range from anything from £1.99 up to around £12 for a foundation where as MAC would easily charge around £20-£25 for a product that supposedly does the same thing. From personal experience I would always choose the higher priced brands as I feel that these are better quality, I would much rather pay the extra and have a foundation that also has a moisturiser in that will not clog up my skin, being a female, this is very important to most girls I know. So there is going to be a choice that I make about where my brand lays in the pricing range and what my target audience will be. Whether I go for the ladies who will happily spend, or will this brand be for the girls who are maybe buying their first lipstick with their pocket money.
I think that this is a decision that I should make a little later down the line in the project. I want to do a little more research and designing and see where I think that this brand and brand identity will be placed and look right at home.

Next step of my research I am going to have a look at the MAC drawings which are used for examples of how to apply make up. These are shown in shops by the make up counters to show customers how the make up on show can be used and what it will look like when applied correctly.
This kind of drawing really interests me, but it is not what I would choose to draw my self for this project. I think that this works really well for MAC make up as their make up choices can sometimes be quite a harsh look like this one here but with my make up brand I would like it to be a natural but a little bit of bright colour every now and then, like lipsticks or a nail varnish.
