section 2: Research field of study

Section 2: Research Field of Study

The methods of research that I have conducted in this project started by looking through magazines. I closely looked at the relationship between each advertisement to see the type of direction that they have taken, depending on the brand and company style. From looking through these and I can see what type of target audience the different brands go for. For example, Rimmel as a brand, from its advertising, all the make up and ideas seem bright and exciting which I would associate with being young. It would appear that the target audience for this brand is 18-30, Although Kate Moss is and has been a model for Rimmel for sometime and is older than the target buyer, she is a role model and younger girls instantly recognise her, therefore will feel they could look older and more mature - If Kate Moss wears this, then so can I, type of attitude. Looking at Loreal also, their advertisements seemed to be swaying more towards the older market. Although the models seem to look young, the models are 25-30 and above. Loreal’s price range is also slightly higher than Rimmel, which would mean that they go for the ‘working lady’ rather than ‘pocket money’ make up which some of Rimmel's potentially could be. Those are examples of what I have been looking at and I have then looked into what I believe the clients needs from the design of my brand. I think that with campaigns, clients need mainly to see the product clearly. They also need an example on the page of what the product looks like on. I can see that those are the two main priorities of the make up advertising world. Soon, I am going to be starting to design my logo and brand as a whole and in the logo, I think I would like to incorporate some make up in to the actual logo, so it is instantly known that this brand is a make up brand. Brands such as MAC can get away with having the one word, as they are so well known, there is no need for anything else. But for my brand, as I am going to be using illustration for the campaign and wall paper, I would like to make this in the logo in order to get a certain style going, through out all my parts of the project. I want it to be different to other make up brands that I have researched, still keeping it simple like a lot of brands, but in my own way.

I want to create something unusual and personal, that hasn’t been included in these brands I have been looking into for research. I have looked into styles of drawing similar to mine and looking into different ways in which I could experiment with and also develop my skills. Such as an illustrator called Natalie Lines, she has a beautiful style of drawing which would sit well with the theme I am going for, she illustrates for Company magazine. What I like about her style is that some has been illustrated and other parts of the image has been digitally illustrated, so combining the two, I think works really well and could work perfectly along side what I am aiming to do with colour to show the make up of my pieces. When I looked more into her site, I found other commissions she has had, and has illustrated for In Style magazine, in which she drew make up. Helping me imagine how I could produce drawings of make up, instead of photography, I think this is important for me, for the branding and wallpaper that I want to create for my project.

Illustration has a certain aspect of it which can be brought through time, the historical aspect of it still can shine through, as it can still be used with out a computer digitally enhancing it. The great thing about illustration now is that it can be manipulated in so many ways using programmes such as Photoshop it can be mass produced, copied and pasted, colour enhancing, colour changing and enlarged among some of the options. Of course, I still appreciate an original illustration, but for my work I am so grateful that I have this kind of access to many different ways of producing work, learning many new skills along the way.

I have been looking through previous work of my own and I have decided that I to stay true to myself and my work style I am going to create work that can be recognised as mine, I love to look at others work and get inspiration from them, this also helps me get new ideas and skills by seeing and trying them out for myself. I have done some initial drawings for this project already and I am looking closely at these to see where I can develop these and even incorporate them into my logo, campaigns and wallpaper. When I first drew them, I did it for a purpose, simply showing colour on the simple faces that I draw, but I now know that I need to show actual make up and colour. So to now to delve and develop further I am going to try out a technique of using real make up as a tool to draw with. For example, nail varnish to paint hand drawn nails, and eye shadow, in a small eye shadow pot. I feel then this way I can show real colour on the campaigns and wall paper. I also think it might be a beautiful thing to personalise the wall paper once its printed (without colour).
